If I Were Donata
As I have been reading a book called The Daughter of Venice, I have been thinking what I would do if I were Donata, the heroine. Because I live in Twenty-first century, I don’t think that I could understand Donata’s attitude and the situation that Donata had gone through. However, if I were Donata, I would accept my destiny that I would not try to avoid the duties that nobility woman has to face.
Donata lied to her parents and escaped from her palazzo to explore the world outside from her home. As she felt trapped inside of her palazzo, she hated to do things that others expect of her. Moreover, Donata wanted to receive an education however, by that time period, it was very unpopular for women to receive education as the society did not accept it. “I felt guilty when Laura quit tutorial lessons, and I told her.” (Page. 149) I wouldn’t let my sister to do all of my work because it’s my responsibility to finish it. Moreover, if Donata’s mother had noticed that Laura was doing Donata’s work while Donata was outside working in someplace else, Donata would get into a trouble for sure and that also goes to Laura. Because I would never want my siblings to get a trouble for me therefore, I would not ignore what I have to do. Moreover, when Donata went out, a beggar boy bullied Donata. I don’t understand why Donata was eager to keep explore even though she was treated differently from what she would have been treated inside of her palazzo. “If your beg as bad as you lie, you’ll not last long in this world. Take your fake fancy talk and go die somewhere else.” No one could treat a noble girl like this, it would be so insulted to me and I would not explore any longer.
I am not interested in society as much as Donata does. Maybe, it’s because I already know and I have freedom to be educated as much as I want to. Moreover, I haven’t been trapped inside of the house as Donata has felt. Therefore, it’s impossible to understand her desire completely. However, even if I do not understand her, because I do have some parts that I disagree with her, I would never act so selfish as her such as lying to my parents and using my siblings for the benefit of my own.

Communicating and Understanding

Donata is in father’s bedchamber, she’s persuading him in order to listen to brothers’ tutorial. She seems very nervous to talk to father about it. Donata’s father knows her more while they are having conversation. In the beginning, he did not see her as an individual person. Which means she was seen as one of women. After they have conversation, father began to see her individualism and recognize her intelligence and need for an education.
At first, Donata’s father did not know her well and did not understand her. “ What are you talking about daughter? (pg,107)”. He doesn’t even call her name, Donata is seen as one of his daughters like the women in the xilografia, instead of seeing her unique personality. However, when he calls his sons, he calls their name. It shows he doesn’t respect daughters as much as he does to sons.
Since Donata tells him how much she wants an education, Donata’s father is started to listen to her. However, he still has objections and doesn’t recognize her character. “ The boys have been studying since they were seven. How could you possibly understand anything that goes on joining them now? (pg.107) ”. He thinks if Donata listens to brothers’ tutorial, she would not understand what they are talking about. He did not recognize how smart she is. In addition, he thinks it’s impossible to her because she won’t take it seriously.
After Donta's father listened to her, he began to know her more, recognize her intelligence and see her as an individual person. “ Your audacity almost offends me… but a mind that can hold so many numbers need nourishment, or it will languish and die. Yes, you and your sister many listen in on tutorial (pg.108). ” Donata’s father became impressed her audacity and passion about the tutorial. Donata's father knows that a woman is listening the tutorial is very unusual and the society might ignore Donata. However, he found out that Donata is very intellingent and she needs an education.
In the beginning, Donata seemed very nervous to talk to father. Which means she never had a conversation as this serious and she never spoken her requirements like this important. However, after they have conversation, she seems much more comfortable to talk to father. Also, Donata’s father did not know about her very much. However, he began to listen to her, he knew her more and began to see her individual character. As a result, this conversation helped their relationship to become closer and Donata and Father to begin understanding each other.
Claudia's strengths

In the novel, From the Mixed- Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler, written by E.L Konigsburg, the main character is Claudia. Claudia felt that there was lots of injustice at home because she was the oldest child and had to do all the chores. She decided to run away. She escaped from home with her brother Jamie and hid at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. When they were hiding in the museum, Claudia got interested in the secretive angel and started to research about it. Finally, her and Jamie learned the secret of the angel from Mrs. Frankweiler, who narrated the story. In the adventure, Claudia’s organized and curious character helped the adventure to be successful.
In the story, Claudia showed her organized personality affected the adventure. First, her organization made their adventure easy and safe. For example,
after they entered in the museum, Claudia told him where to go and how they are going to hide when the guards are checking. “Because I’m certain that when they check the ladies’ room and men’s room, they peek under the door and check only to see if there are feet…”[pg.36]. As always, Claudia told Jamie her plan. She told Jamie exact where to go and the way how they are going to hide when the guards are checking around the museum. Which means she thought about every little details and planed for it. Not to be surprised and panic before they got in to the museum. The another example, “oh! There'll be a night watch man, I’m sure, but he mostly walks around the roof to keep people from breaking in. We are already in. They call what walks, a cat walk, we’ll learn his habits soon enough…” [pg.36]. Jamie asked how they are going to do with the watch man and Claudia answered it. Claudia had thought of the watch man and where he might be and how he might look around the museum. It shows that she doesn’t let anything happens before she thought of it and plan for it. In dialogue and quotes her thoughts actions, relationship and physical appearance she showed her organization character so many times.
The second Claudia’s character that affected the adventure was her curious personality. During the adventure, Claudia’s curious character made Jamie and Claudia to learn about “ The Angel ’’. She said that she wants to know about the angel statue. Such as, [on page 53,] “ we’ve got to get one, Jamie. Don’t you want to know why everyone is standing in line to see it?” Claudia was saying to Jamie that she’s very curious about the angel and got to know about it. When she saw the angel, the angel intrigued her and then she began researching about it. She went to library to read books that related to the angel. She never skips anything that intrigued her and she wanted to learn about it enthusiastically. It shows she is very curious about the angel. Another example, [on page 120,] “Jamie, I want to know if Michelangelo did it. I can’t explain why exactly. I feel that I’ve got to know for sure. One way the other. A real discovery is going to help me.” she was talking to Jamie when Jamie said he wants to stop learning about it and go back to home. However, Claudia didn’t want to go back to home she wanted to continue learning about the statue. It means she has passion in the statue and she learns about it and she became more important than the adventure to her. Her curious character changed the adventure differently and interesting. If Claudia weren’t curious about the angel, probably Jamie and Claudia would just hide and go back to home. When Jamie wanted to go back to their house, Claudia wanted to go to Mrs. Frankweiler’s house to ask about the secret of angel. Which means, she’s not just curious about it. If she were just curious about it, she wouldn’t go to Mrs. Frankweiler’s house for asking. That represents she’s very curious about the statue and she learns about it enthusiastically.
Throughout this novel, there were many different characters but, the most important and the most affective characters was Claudia’s personalities because her organization and curious personality made the adventure. That reminded me that good planning makes anything to happen fine and thinking of something before doing it is more safety. Moreover, being curious about something is very good for learning about it and a chance to get interested in it. This novel gave me a lesson by the different characters.

Chinese New Year
with red.
As red as blood.
Cruck Boom Boom
Fireworks shooting
like guns.
Adults enjoy
like children.
People spend
happy time
with
family and lovers.
Fireworks dance
in the sky
People sing
like birds.
Chinese new year's night is like
one big
musical show!
Outside of My House
in the center of KL
There is
convention center
right across my apartment.
Many people walk on my street.
I can hear
murmuring sounds.
Many cars are coming down
so it is always noisy
There is a garden
in my apartment.
No one goes there.
It's like
my secret garden.
Ther garden is
as quiet as
midnight in a country side.
My Bed
comfortable.
It's hard
to stay awake
on my bed.
It makes me
sleepy.
Even though
I slept enough
I fall in a sleep
5 minutes later
I lie on the bed
and
close my eyes.
